Interview: Queen Paula

BADH: Wasup baby girl!
Queen Paula: Good everything is good you know.

BADH: So tell us Queen Paula how long have you been in the industry?
Queen Paula: I have been in the industry from like 1990 and up.

BADH: How has it been for you?
Queen Paula: Well Queen Paula is not really a song artist. Queen Paula is more of a stage show artist. It is recently that I start voice some songs. I normally dominate stage shows. You know I am like a female Bounty Killa.

BADH: Yeah I have seen you go off on some stage shows.
Queen Paula: Lately I have been doing some nice 45 for Richie B, you know Digital Chris, Murray. I have one on the Liquid Label. I have a new video with the Richie B song (she starts to sing) If a gyal think say my money get him over night. Mi hold him, nah let him go and mi ready fi fight.

BADH: (laughing) I like that Paula
Queen Paula: That is the song for the new video on the Richie B but before that it was like strictly stage shows. I just started doing some songs.

BADH: Well think goodness you started. Do not limit yourself.
Queen Paula: But recently somebody stepped on my corn again, Predator.

BADH: What!!
Queen Paula: I had to get rough on him.

BADH: Well what happen I want to know.
Queen Paula: He had a song where he said Saw is ugly, Macka is ugly, and Cecil is ugly. It was just a hype but it sounded nice, it look like it was going to do something for him but then you know it slowed down. I am not really upset with him but from he call my name he know I am going to answer him back.

BADH: Yeah come to think of it I think I read something about that.
Queen Paula: I said like (she starts to sing) Predator who use thief ackee around Red Hills Road. Ninja Ford dun say him eye big like toad. Him head square like block and him tuff like a board. Bout old, mi fresh like a rose. Shaggy and Beenie Man dem a mad when me pose. 50 cent want to water mi lawn with his hose and every weekend me fly out to get nails and toes. The dutty foot bwoy a hitch under Bounty Killa nose.

BADH: (laughing) Well you know he is going to be mad with you saying that.
Queen Paula: (laughing) Yeah he was mad until somebody calmed him down. It is the chorus part Predator did not like.

BADH: What about the chorus part? How does it go?
Queen Paula: Something another about tongue, like gyal a swing pon him tongue. So he is kind of vexed over the chorus. (everyone starts laughing) I love when I deejay people laugh but it is all fun. I do not really mean anything by it.

BADH: (still laughing) Well I am sorry; he should not have made a song such as the one in which he did if he can not take getting dissed back.
Queen Paula: You know.

BADH: Sing the song for me Queen Paula
Queen Paula: (she starts to sing) Do you remember that boy who call me name in his song. Tell him say me old but me fit and me strong. Me can whine from top straight down to bottom. Go tell Predator say me fresh and me young. Me have a new name where me a go mention. Him name dildo tongue, dildo tongue. Gyal swing pon him tongue just like a swing song. Him name dildo tongue, dildo tongue. Cha man.

BADH: (laughing) I love it
Queen Paula: (laughing) Thanks. It was done at a stage show. But now I have some nice songs that are coming out that you can look for

BADH: So you write your own songs?
Queen Paula: Yes, I just write like crazy. I think I can do acting when I am not writing.

BADH: You ever thought about being a ghost writer for other deejays?
Queen Paula: Yes I think about that because I have a lot of songs that I write; some funny, some sweet, some for lovers.

BADH: So what are you working on now?
Queen Paula: Well what I am working on now is like how I have that video, I look forward to working on an album.

BADH: So the other night I got sick so I did not get to go to Macka Diamond party. How was it?
Queen Paula: It was nice. It was good. We have a lovely turn out because of the rain we would not say it was jam packed but it was full. The performance was good because that was the first stage show that New York ever see Macka Diamond and Queen Paula on. I gave them an anthem saying (she starts to sing) I remember those days when me and Macka use to par. The two of we a roll in the same car. One bun and cheese a share for me and har. Then violence broke out and we start war. We get rich now, money a spend now.

BADH: Who would you like to work with?
Queen Paula: Well who would I like to work with? I wonder if my chest to high when I say Jay-Z, 50 Cent. I love those rough kind of rappers. In Jamaica it could be Beenie, Bounty, Sizzla.

Queen Paula: You are the first one to catch me and Macka Diamond together.
BADH: Really!?

Queen Paula: People come with riddims for us to do but she really do not want to work with those kind you know.
BADH: Yeah I can understand that.

BADH: So what are you doing when you are not doing music?
Queen Paula: I am like a house person you know. I stay at home and cook, spend time with my 7-year-old daughter.

BADH: Are you single, married?
Queen Paula: No, I try to keep that private.

BADH: Paula thank you for sitting down with us and I want to hear some songs from you soon. You have some nice lyrics.
Queen Paula: Thanks Peach.
